Art Doll Wire and Paper Sculpture – Snowflake (from the ballet – The Nutcracker)

Tom helps me to list items on Etsy and in our shop and, last night when it came to listing this piece, he asked me what it was called.  We like to give the pieces names, it makes each piece more individual and brings them to life by connecting them with their essence.  The pieces I create are, more often than not, inspired by well known literary characters. On this occasion I just let my imagination guide me, I knew where Iwas going with this piece but she was finished without a name.

We spent quite some time trying to name this piece, thinking about all sorts of characters, until eventually I thought of the ballet the Nutcracker. From there it was but a short step to imagine her as one of the dancers representing the snowfalkes. And so, Snowflake was born.

The ballet, by Tchaikovsky, is a two act ballet famous for the twenty-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from it.  The complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the mid-20th century and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season.
