Another assemblage art piece completed, Jamaica Inn, a story box based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier. The plot of the novel follows a group of murderous wreckers who run ships aground, kill the sailors and steal the cargo. The chief character is 20 year old Mary Yellan, Sent to live with her Aunt Patience and her husband, Joss Merlyn, the seven foot tall bully and keeper of Jamaica Inn. I see my assemblage as the journal of 20 year old Mary, who has lovingly put it together from scraps and mementos she has found and holds dear.
I love Daphne du Maurier. Having first read Jamaica Inn several years ago I’ve read it many times since and continue to love its dark broodiness, set as it is, on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. Jamaica Inn is a real Inn and still exists today; I can remember visiting it with Tom during a trip to Cornwall when we were first married. I doubt it looked the same in Mary’s time as it does now.
If you’d like to find out more about Jamaica Inn there is a page on Wikipedia. If you’d like to read the novel, unfortunately I couldn’t find a copy at Project Gutenberg ( a place to get free books) but, you can purchase it from Amazon. Or you could always watch it on DVD, again various versions are available from Amazon, my favourite being the BBC version.
