Assemblage – Elizabeth (Elizabeth Bennet Pride & Prejudice)

Elizabeth Bennet

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813, it is the inspiration for my latest assemblage dress. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman, living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.

Elizabeth Bennet

To findout more about the author – Jane Austen and the novel, try these Wikipedia pages – the author or the novel .  If you would like to read the novel, it is avilable free and in several different formats, here at the wonderful Project Gutenberg.

Assemblage – Alice (Drink Me)

The assemblage as a closed book

I was given a tiny old 1930′s encyclopedia and loved the size of it.  So, I just thought of Alice in Wonderland, where she enters a minature world.

The assemblage opened

When I took the photos for our online shop and Etsy store the sun was out and I managed to get some good photos in the natural light.  Here are some of the extra photos I took but have not been used on Etsy.

Assemblage – Another Stolen Moment

I’m enjoying playing with book sculptures at the moment and love the idea of little theater sets.

Another Stolen Moment

In the next few pieces I want to create drama and atmosphere in the pieces.

As usual this assemblage is available in my online shop or Etsy store

Treasury Time – hold the front page

Just had to put this one up.  I put this treasury together last Thursday and thought nothing more about it.

I normally have Tom sort out notifying everybody when I put together a treasury and they usually respond via Etsy.  Well, like I said, I forgot this time so, when I checked for views and clicks on Friday , I was suprised  to see so many responses.  On looking at the replies I fond out the teasury had made it onto the front page at Etsy.  First time for me!

September Assemblage – The Nymph

Assemblage – The Nymph
Assemblage – The Nymph

September is here, the holidays are over and we’re all back to work.  The first piece I’ve completed this autumn is another assemblage, made mostly from and old book.  She is inspired by those sometimes mischievous mythological creatures  – nymphs; in this case a water nymph rather than any other type.  There are many famous nymphs but I couldn’t decide which nymph this piece might represent, so I’ve simply called her – The Nymph.  If you would like to find out more about nymphs, you might try following this link to the Wikipedia page about Nymphs.

Assemblage Art Dress Made From Paper and Fabric with hardbacked book base.

Small 26cm long, 26cm wide, 19cm depth, paper fabric assemblage dress.

A small three dimensional assemblage comprising a paper and fabric sculpture stood atop an old hardback book, as if coming out of the pages of the book. The Nymph is made from wire and papier mache, attired in a dress made from pale lilac silk and linen blend material. The underskirt is a gathered white cotton with tiny stitches at the hem. Her hair is fashioned from a cream cotton with wires stitched in to give it shape and form.

The figure is posed to suggest the flowing movement of the wind as it swirls around her. Nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing.

Assemblage Without a Name

Assemblage Without a Name

So I’m back to creating and making.  I’m still experimenting with different ways of presenting my assemblage dresses.  For this one I’ve gone back to my experience of attending a workshop run by Luned Parry, as you can see from the photo this dress has a figure inside it.  The idea was to have the figure free standing but that didn’t work out so, I’ve used an old book as the base and attached the figure to the book.

I hope to finish her soon but as yet she has no name.  Perhaps you could suggest a name; any ideas, leave a comment.
