Art Dress Assemblage – Swan Lake

The commission I was working on is done and dusted, so I thought I’d share a few images, its Swan Lake. I enjoyed making the piece but boy was it fiddly, the front trees are wire then paper mache. I’m loving little lights on my work at the moment, it makes them atmospheric. Hope you like it, would love to hear your comments.

Swan Lake.

I had a lovely idea from Barbara the other week, French lieutenant’s woman, brilliant idea, and I haven’t had a chance to thank her yet so big thank you Barbara, something I’m going to look forward to doing.

I’m working on more figures at the moment and am really enjoying doing them. I’m trying to put more detail in the form of the figure and at the same time keeping the piece quite simple. Finding the sort of poses I like, is quite difficult so I’m going to get my willowy friend to model for me so I can take lots of drawings of her and use them for the figurines. Good excuse to do a load of gesture drawings as well.

Assemblage Art Dress – Little Women

Little Women inspired assemblage art dress

Little Women inspired assemblage art dress

I’m beginning to catch up with myself, managed to create the first of the “Little Women” inspired assemblage art dresses.

Assemblage art dress.

Designed for winter.

I’ve not named this piece for one of the sisters as it was just based upon the novel itself. I want to try and get hold of a few copies of the book before I start to create pieces attributable to each individual sister. I’ll use the pages of the book to help form a dress and the cover will be used to form a backdrop.

Inspired for the novel rather than one particular sister.

A small three dimensional dress inspired by the novel – Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The bodice is made from old book papers, sculpted and stitched together. The skirt is stitched together from old book pages, a soft pale blue cotton fabric with pearly beads sewn on and a soft neutral grey coloured satin which has been ruched and gathered. Covering the dress is an intricately tailored coat. Adorning the coat is a tiny cameo vintage piece of jewelery.

Peony – Assemblage Art Dress

assemblage art dress.

Peony, an assemblage art dress.

Peony, an assemblage art dress, is a version of an earlier piece. I think it was early May this year when I first made the original. She was one of the last pieces I made before taking a couple of weekend breaks and concentrating on a commission I had. Since then, between one thing and another, I’ve had little time to work and found it hard to restock my little Etsy store but, I’m getting there.

The folds of the dress remind me of petals.

Before wandering over to Wikipedia to see if I could find any information about the Peony, I’d already decide that the folds of the dress reminded me of the petals of the Penoy and so she was named. Meanwhile, a quick glance at Wikipedia tells me the peony is named after Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Apparently Asclepius became jealous of his pupil but Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower. This is a somewhat more masculine connection than what I had hoped for. Never mind, we’ll just have to hope that he was in touch with his feminine side 😉

Adding a little vintage bling.

Peony is 28cm long, 25cm wide, a paper and fabric assemblage art dress, fashioned as a classic ball gown made from a stunning lilac coloured soft satin and book pages. The 3 dimensional bodice is sculpted from old book papers. The top dress is ruched to form peony shaped flowers. At the waist of the dress is a beautiful vintage piece of costume jewelry . Many pleated and sewn book pages under the dress give the dress its shape. And to set it off I’ve included a stunning piece of vintage costume jewelry at the waist. Hope you like her 🙂

Young Scarlett O’Hara – Assemblage Art Dress

art dress assemblage - Scarlett O'Hara

Scarlett O’Hara.

Staying with Scarlett O’hara; I love the book and film “Gone With The Wind”. I’ve watched the film I don’t know how many times but at the moment I’m reading the book.

art dress assemblage - Scarlett O'Hara

Scarlett was only sixteen at the start of the book.

I forget that at the start of the book Scarlett is only sixteen, no worries, no responsibilities … “and made the plans that a sixteen-year-old makes when life has been so pleasant that defeat is an impossibility and a pretty dress and a clear complexion are weapons to vanquish fate.”

I’ve gone for a brighter palette.

I wanted this piece to be young and frivolous; Scarlett with all her dreams in front of her before life and experience map her personality into the woman she becomes.

Brighter but still pale?

Trying to capture Scarlett’s  youth and exuberance, the palette I’ve adopted for this piece is much brighter than that which I normally gravitate toward. No gallery for this piece, the photos I’ve taken for the Etsy listing are enough I think.

“What’s that Tom?”

“Yes, its another Scarlett O’Hara and, frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Ha! got my own back. 😉

Scarlett O’Hara – A Mixed Media Assemblage Dress

The mixed media assemblage art dress – Scarlett  O’Hara, is the first mixed media assemblage art dress I’ve made and listed since finishing work on a recent commission. I put her up on Etsy a few days ago but, continuing to be busy I’ve not had a chance to post her here, which I should have done last Friday. Returning to my early designs for assemblage mixed media art dress, I’ve once again based this piece around heroine from a well known literary source – Gone With The Wind.

Scarlett O’Hara is the central figure of the 1936 novel Gone With The Wind, written by Margaret Mitchell.  An epic tale it tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara, living through one of America’s most troubled times as it wrestled with itself to become a united nation. Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of an Irish immigrant lives on Tara, a plantation in the deep south. Scarlett falls in love with Ashley Wilkes, but Ashley, marries his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. At the engagement party Scarlett first meets the rouge Rhett Butler. Then the Civil War begins, just as Scarlett accepts a proposal of marriage from Melanie’s brother, Charles Hamilton. However, Charles dies in training before seeing action. Going into mourning Scarlett decides to wear black and not attend any parties, locking herself away from her usual society. Scarlett’s home Tara, is ravaged by the civil war and falls in to rack and ruin but she manages to keep it going. Later Scarlett approaches Rhett to get money to pay taxes on Tara but he rebuffs her. So, she ends up marrying her sister’s fiancé, Frank Kennedy. Now Frank has a business which Scarlett, through, business practices that make many Atlantans resent her, increases its profitability. But, tragedy is never far away from Scarlett and   Frank is killed when he and other Ku Klux Klan members raid a shanty town where Scarlet was assaulted while driving alone. After this Scarlett marries Rhett, who is aware of her love for Ashley but, hopes one day she will love him instead. Scarlett eventually realizes she does love Rhett, but by now, the couple has been through so much that Rhett has fallen out of love with her.

Scarlett O’Hara is the central figure of the 1936 novel Gone With The Wind.

Gone With The Wind is an epic story, it’s available from Amazon in many different formats film, book etc, just click the link below to go to the Amazon search results page for Gone With The Wind.

Unlike the famous curtain dress (watch the film), my mixed media assemblage art dress – Scarlett O’Hara, is only 23cm long, 28cm wide and 28cm. Still, it is a classic ball gown, made from a stunning Lilac/purple coloured taffeta and book pages from the book “Gone With The Wind”. The 3 dimensional bodice and skirt of the dress is sculpted from old book papers. The skirt has been sculpted in a way to make the dress look as if it’s it has the hoops that give the dress that very full skirted look so familiar with Gone With The Wind. The petticoats are made from organza again giving the full skirt. Adorning the bodice is a small piece of beautiful costume jewelry.

One of Scarlett’s lines reads “I can’t think of that right now. If I do, I’ll go crazy. I’ll think about that tomorrow.” I know how she feels after trying to catch up with all my work but, I have another mixed media assemblage art dress to hand, I’ll post her a little later today. And, if I get the chance I’ll have a stab at a Wordless Wednesday too.

Oh, I almost forgot. When I asked Tom about the piece his reply was “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn”. Typical 🙂

Assemblage Art Dress – Midnight Ball

I’ve been looking forward to using this material.  the Navy blue is gorgeous especially against the silver costume jewelry.  The little crystals are like tiny stars shining in the dark night sky.  The idea of the dress comes from the little book assemblages I did “And the Clock Struck Twelve.”
