Art Dress Assemblage – Swan Lake

The commission I was working on is done and dusted, so I thought I’d share a few images, its Swan Lake. I enjoyed making the piece but boy was it fiddly, the front trees are wire then paper mache. I’m loving little lights on my work at the moment, it makes them atmospheric. Hope you like it, would love to hear your comments.

Swan Lake.

I had a lovely idea from Barbara the other week, French lieutenant’s woman, brilliant idea, and I haven’t had a chance to thank her yet so big thank you Barbara, something I’m going to look forward to doing.

I’m working on more figures at the moment and am really enjoying doing them. I’m trying to put more detail in the form of the figure and at the same time keeping the piece quite simple. Finding the sort of poses I like, is quite difficult so I’m going to get my willowy friend to model for me so I can take lots of drawings of her and use them for the figurines. Good excuse to do a load of gesture drawings as well.

Assemblage book sculpture From Paper and Fabric – The Ballerina

I’ve made a couple of small book assemblages recently, “Alice” and this one “The Ballerina”.

The Ballerina

I listed “Alice” on Etsy first and the customer who bought her asked, could I make something similar but in a ballerina style. So I made “The Ballerina” and although she is already sold I still wanted to share her with you.

Commissioned as a partner for “Alice”

It’s a piece for a young ballerina so I hope she’s pleased with it. I want to try and find more of these small books, they’re like little pocket books similar to a pocket dictionary.

I wonder if the inclusion of these little shoes is becoming a trade mark?

Anyway back to work, I’m really busy at the moment playing catch up with everything and an other commission to complete.

The colours in this piece are some of my favourites.

Art Assemblage Cotton Rag Book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I’ve gone back to the classics, a book I could and have read over and over again – Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. This is my first piece inspired by this book. I’ve made another little cotton rag book, this time the cover of the book is made from an old vintage leather wallet, I couldn’t resist it when I found it among other vintage wallets, pouches and purses. This one has a beautiful worn polished sheen about it making it incredibly tactile. You can tell it’s been loved and cared for by the little stitched repairs.  I couldn’t just pass by and ignore it, I wanted to give it a new lease of life.

My beautiful wallet.

I thought it very fitting for Jane Eyre, strong and no fuss about it. I’ve embroidered a Quote from the book – “Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! – I have as much soul as you, – and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you!” I’ve embroidered it onto some lovely vintage embroidered white cottons.

The pages are backed by an old worn soft vintage blanket.

I’m going to be working on another Jane Eyre piece, using the book. But in the meantime I hope you like this piece. I’ve nearly finished Wendy from Peter Pan, just waiting for a bulb to be delivered then I can get it up in my Etsy shop.

I’ve also used soft white vintage handkerchiefs with lots of intricate.

Assemblage Art Dress – Little Women

Little Women inspired assemblage art dress

Little Women inspired assemblage art dress

I’m beginning to catch up with myself, managed to create the first of the “Little Women” inspired assemblage art dresses.

Assemblage art dress.

Designed for winter.

I’ve not named this piece for one of the sisters as it was just based upon the novel itself. I want to try and get hold of a few copies of the book before I start to create pieces attributable to each individual sister. I’ll use the pages of the book to help form a dress and the cover will be used to form a backdrop.

Inspired for the novel rather than one particular sister.

A small three dimensional dress inspired by the novel – Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The bodice is made from old book papers, sculpted and stitched together. The skirt is stitched together from old book pages, a soft pale blue cotton fabric with pearly beads sewn on and a soft neutral grey coloured satin which has been ruched and gathered. Covering the dress is an intricately tailored coat. Adorning the coat is a tiny cameo vintage piece of jewelery.

Art Assemblage Tin -Le Cirque

Another little tin box assemblage.

Another little tin box assemblage.

This art assemblage tin came about after my little trip around the net, looking for inspiration and ending up at the circus. The colours I chose for this piece were not my usual colour palette but, I felt the colours on the outside of the tin called for something flamboyant.

The outside of this tin is more colorful than those I've previously worked with.

Being 12 cm long, 6cm deep, 17cm wide the tin dictated the size of the dress. So, she ended up being a short ballet  style costume, as worn by the ladies of the flying trapeze.

A tin that whispers of an old travelling French circus when the cover draws back. The inside lid of the tin is hand painted using acrylics to look like the night sky with white and gold stars.

I used rhinestones on the tin and dress.

Rhine stones also decorate the inside of the lid to depict the circus tent canopy. Under the canopy hang a pair of worn ballet shoes with a rhinestone on each.

Tiny little shoes.

The slippers, which are fiddly to make but I love to do, are also decorated with rhinestones.

Art Assemblage story tin – Once Upon A Time

Art Assemblage Story Tin – Once Upon A Time

I listed this little Art Assemblage story tin last night but,  as we’re still having problems with our internet, I’d had enough of waiting for things to happen  and decided to call it a day and post it the blog today. Tom has been in touch with our ISP again, they now seem to agree the problem is not down to our equipment and will be sending an engineer out to investigate. But, the engineer will not be coming until next Monday, by which time our connection will probably be working again and he won’t be able to tell what is wrong.

Art Assemblage

The title has been embroidered on to a small cloth panel.

In the time its taken for me to post this, the piece has been bought, pushing my Etsy sales through the two hundred mark :D.  Thanks to everybody who has supported me through sales and by helping to get my work out to a wider audience.

Though its gone I hope you’ll still enjoy these extra pics.

“Once Upon A Time.” – Art Assemblage story tin.

An assemblage of another time captured in a small vintage tin, which is 17 cm long, 15cm wide when the tin is opened, 7.5 cm when closed.

A tin that whispers a story when the cover draws back. The inside lid of the tin is hand painted using acrylics and acrylic sculpting paste. At the top of the lid is a pale cream cameo, hanging below are a pair of tiny hand sculpted dancing pumps made from papier mache. Inside the tin are three ball dresses. Each dress can be taken in and out of the tin.
