Spring Wedding Art Dress

I meant to put this little art dress assemblage up on the blog last week.  However, she sold very qucikly, before I had a chance to get the gallery made, so I decided to leave her. Anyway, I liked her so much I decided to make a copy and, here she is, made from materials found on a recent trip to Oswestry.

Assemblage Art Dress – Cathy

Using some of my new finds I’ve created, in a similar style to my Stolen Moment pieces, Cathy. Of course by now you’ll know about liking for Wuthering Heights, a novel by Emily Brontë published in 1847. It was her only novel and written between December 1845 and July 1846.

Normally I have loads of spare photos for use on the blog, differing from those I use on the Etsy listing, but on this occasion I didn’t .  So I’m only reproducing the Etsy listing in this post, to keep people up to date with what I’m doing.

Cathy – A book sculpture using the book “Wuthering Heights”

A small three dimensional assemblage comprising a backdrop fashioned from the remnants of the book from which the dress is made. The background is an image of a forest and painted in midnight blue tones and silver leaf were the light filters through, representing their dark relationship.

20cm long, 26cm wide, 12cm

I wanted the dress to look lonely and ethereal from another time. The skirt of the dress has been made from cottons and some lovely vintage white handkerchiefs. Adorning the dress around the waist are some vintage costume pearls, also three tiny vintage baby buttons that are exquisite.

I wanted the dress to look lonely and ethereal from another time.

Embroidered on a banner around the top of the book are the words “He’s more myself than I am, whatever our souls are made from, his and mine are the same.”

“He’s more myself than I am, whatever our souls are made from, his and mine are the same.”

Adorning the dress around the waist are some vintage costume pearls, also three tiny vintage baby buttons that are exquisite. The back of the bodice has a corset effect.

I’ve used my vintage pearls to adorn the waist of the dress.

Vintage Tin Assemblage Art – My Delight and Thy Delight

My Delight and Thy Delight

No Tom, its not the tin you thought, is it?  Unlike you I can multitask 😉 and this tin was being worked on in tandem with the one you spotted. This tin has been influenced by the beautiful poem My Delight and Thy Delight by the British poet Robert Bridges.

My Delight and Thy Delight

Again my love of words have come into play.

Robert Bridges
My Delight and Thy Delight

MY delight and thy delight
Walking, like two angels white,
In the gardens of the night:

My desire and thy desire
Twining to a tongue of fire,
Leaping live, and laughing higher:

Thro’ the everlasting strife
In the mystery of life.

Love, from whom the world begun,
Hath the secret of the sun.

Love can tell, and love alone,
Whence the million stars were strewn,
Why each atom knows its own,
How, in spite of woe and death,
Gay is life, and sweet is breath:

This he taught us, this we knew,
Happy in his science true,
Hand in hand as we stood
‘Neath the shadows of the wood,
Heart to heart as we lay
In the dawning of the day.

My Delight and Thy Delight

Art Dress Assemblage – A Stolen Moment (3)

“The moon is an arrant thief,
And her pale fire she snatches from the sun”

Art Dress Assemblage – A Stolen Moment

A favourite quote from a Shakespeare play which makes me think of moonlight streaming through windows, illuminating scenes not intended for you and I, an instance frozen in time in which only dust motes can betray the stillness, what happens when no one is there? “A Stolen Moment” is a theme which runs through several of my pieces and a title I feel will always recur.

Art Dress Assemblage – A Stolen Moment

I was given the material used here by a very good friend, she is very aware of my love of material and magpie hoarding instincts. It’s a beautiful pale peachy salmon and I spent some time looking forward to making something with it. I wanted to
keep this piece simple with the background reminiscent of a time gone by, the stunning colour of the dress taking centre stage, glowing in the moonlight which floods in through a window. For me the scene conjures up imaginary memories of when the dress was last worn, who wore it and where did she go.

The pieces I make are frequently influenced by the materials I have to hand; their texture, pattern, weave and colour really do guide me. Looking back on some of my pieces this is quite clear to me, “The Princes and the Pea” being a good example. I had ideas about how I wanted her to look but, the material I had at the time did not fit, that’s why it took me so long get her finished.

I’ve been looking in my scraps of late with “Rapunzel” at the back of my mind. I think I may have spotted something, an idea is forming and it maybe that I get her started this weekend.

Art Dress Assemblage – Flutter In And Fill Up My Hopeless Heart

Looking to create a dress giving off the feeling of youth, excitement and fun, I pinched this soft rich cream colored cotton from my daughter Tabby.

Art Dress Assemblage.

I also pinched the words embroidered on the dress from Tabby.  They come from her music collection, a line from the lyrics of one of the songs.

Art Dress Assemblage.

So, all in all this dress is as much Tabby’s as it is mine.

Art Dress Assemblage – Cathy (Cathy Earnshaw – Wuthering Heights)(2)

It took a little longer than anticipated but I’ve completed the latest art dress –  Cathy, and listed her on Etsy (she has since been bought). I had hoped to get her  finished before the weekend but a rather hectic Saturday saw that deadline slip.  More about that from Tom later.

Art Dress Assemblage - Cathy

This is not the first time I’ve made a piece based on the character of Cathy Earnshaw, from the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, you may have seen the piece I made last September (click here to view the post).  I’m  still taken with the character of Cathy, within the novel she is good and  evil, fantasy and reality, and the book will remain forever one of my favourites.

Art Dress Assemblage - Cathy

My first Cathy was a simpler affair but on this occasion I’ve been more daring;  adding an embroidered quotation to the skirt of the dress and making the jacket far  more elaborate with a gathered decorative bustle at the back.

I recently enjoyed working with some vintage tins, they were quite a fun and a change from the art dresses which have been my focus over the last 12 months. I’m not done with Cathy yet, and I’ve got a feeling she’ll possibly end up inspiring something tiny 🙂

If you’re not familiar with Cathy Earnshaw and the novel Wuthering Heights, check out these Wikipedia pages about her, the novel and the author.

If you would like to read the novel, its avaiable for download free of charge and in many formats ath the wonderful Project Gutenberg .  If you would like to own your own copy of the novel you could always try Amazon. Click here to visit the Amazon search results for the novel.
