Art Dress Assemblage – Miss Havisham

Art Dress Miss Havisham's Wedding Dress

Miss Havisham’s wedding dress.

Set up as  a miniature theater, this is the decaying remnant of Miss Havisham’s wedding dress.

The wedding dress once worn was never removed.

Looking forward to the new film dramatization starring Helena Bonham Carter, I’m also looking forward to making some more Charles Dickens pieces, starting off with Little Dorrit.

Continuing my own little celebration of the 2ooth anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, here is the second dress from Miss Havisham’s trousseau.

The bodice of this dress is sculpted to form a 3 dimensional shape. The material of the skirt is an ivory 100% silk, which has been ruched and stitched together to form blossom shapes at the waist of the skirt. The edging of the skirt is gathered under to give a tulip effect and has a soft fraying muslin underskirt.

Charles Dickens Bi-Centennial – Miss Havisham’s Trousseau Art Dress Assemblage.

Art Dress Assemblage - Miss Havisham's Trousseau (1)

This year marks the 200 anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens considered to be the greatest English novelist of the Victorian era. A great deal has been written about him and finding references about him on the internet is no problem – try Wikipedia.

His novel – Great Expectations has been a favourite of mine for some time and inspired some of my early creations. I’ve not really left it behind as an influence and in celebration of his 200th anniversary I’m revisiting it to put together a small collection of dresses that I imagine as Miss Havisham’s wedding trousseau.

Small 8 inches(20cm) long, 10 inches (26cm) wide, paper fabric art dress assemblage.

A small three dimensional dress, part of the trousseau of Miss Havisham – the matriarch from the classic Dickens novel Great Expectations. Celebrating the bi-centenial of the birth of the famous author, the dress reflects the innocence of Miss Havisham before being jilted at the altar. Though the dress suffers the ravages of time its style remains youthful.

The bodice is sculpted from old book papers. The material of the skirt is a very pale lilac silk and linen mix, which has been ruched and stitched together to form the dome of the skirt. The edging of the skirt is a soft fraying muslin. The skirt is decorated with tiny sewn on beads.
