The Moth Vintage Tin

Revisiting one of my assemblage art pieces form last year, I’ve recreated another of my favorites – The Moth, inspired by a poem by Walter De La Mare.

The moth revisited.

I really liked this when I created it the first time and it led me to offering one of my original high resolution images of the piece as a limited edition print. That print has proved popular, I’ve seen it posted on several other blogs, maybe that’s what stirred me to fashion a her again. I put her up on Etsy last night and would have posted here also but, our internet is playing up and download speeds have crashed to 0.6Mbps – hopeless. I need to get Tom on the case.

I distressed the tin with acrylic.

Anyway by the time I got round to sorting out this post today, I noticed she’s already been bought (apologies to anybody who might have liked to have her but missed out because I didn’t put it up here last night). I would like to try and make her again but the tin she’s in is what makes her for me and I’m not to sure she’d look the same in a different sized tin. We’ll see.

An assemblage of another time captured in a small vintage tin, which is 16 cm long, 12 cm wide when the tin is opened, 6 cm when closed.

The piece has been inspired by the the poem “The Moth” by Walter De la Mare. On the front of the tin is a moth which has been washed with white acrylic along with the tin front. The inside of the tin looks as if it’s from a time gone by, embroidered on a piece of neutral coloured cotton are the words “A moth from her winter swoon uplifts her face”. Above these words is an image of an old clock and under the clock hangs a pair of delicate ballet pumps made from book papers which have been lovingly looked after by their owner. On the other side of the tin hangs the dress which looks as fragile as a moths wings. The tin it’s self has been collaged with book papers, old vintage lace, and in places distressed with acrylic paint.

Art Dress Assemblage – The Moth (Walter De La Mar)

Art Dress Assemblage – The Moth (Walter De La Mare)

Etsy shop update, today I’m revisiting an earlier art dress piece, the original being an art dress  inspired by the the poem “The Moth” by Walter De la Mare and set in a vintage metal tin. I also made a second version of this art dress but, on that occasion I set a slightly larger version within an empty Cuban cigar box. If you’re a regular reader you’ll know I managed to find a couple more Cuban cigar boxes on my last boot sale trip. This means I’ve been able to revisit Walter De La Mar and his poem on the subject of moth.

Borrowing from the poem, in the first art dress I embroidered the words “Times Past” onto the skirt, to go along with the feeling of time captured when the lid of the tin is closed. On the second art dress I borrowed this line from the poem “A tremble in shimmering grace”. As it such a beautiful phrase, I’ve repeated it in this the third version of the art dress.

In detail I’ve collaged a moth onto the inside and outside of the box, then distressed it using acrylic, acrylic gel and silver leaf. A small tab of cloth embroidered with “The Moth” is affixed to the front of the box. Moving to the inside, the inside of the box is made to look as if it’s from a time gone by. Embroidered on a piece of pale blue fabric are the words from the poem “A tremble in shimmering grace”, whilst at the side of these words is a papier mache moon covered in part with silver leaf . On the other side of the box hangs the dress which looks as fragile as a moths wings. The box it’s self has been collaged with book papers and distressed with acrylic paint.

Story in a Vintage Tin (Assemblage)

Story in a Vintage Tin

As you can see I’m intrigued by vintage tins at the moment.  I think its the whole idea of opening a small object, with curiosity, to peek at the small world captured inside.

Story in a Vintage Tin

In this little tin are words that I like, in the middle is a beautiful poem about a nightingale and of course my moths are included 🙂

Art Assemblage – Another Moth Inspired by(Walter De La Mare)

Last week(just checked Etsy and it waS two weeks ago, don’t time fly) I put one of my little dresses into a tin box and was very pleased with the result. I liked that tin,so much so, I found it a spot on the book case in our lounge where I could look at it now and again.

I hoped I might be able to hang on to it for a while but still listed it on Etsy. I shouldn’t say it but, darn if it didn’t sell straight away. Its now living in the Antipodes.

The Moth

Never mind I thought, I’ve got an old cigar box around here somewhere, I’ll make another one. And so I did. Well, I completed that on Wednesday night and listed it on Etsy that same evening. To my complete surprise and delight this one has also been snapped up immediately.

I hope to get around to making some more soon.  Hope you like the gallery.

Normally I post about my pieces within 24hrs of listing them on Etsy, so that people visiting my Etsy shop can come and see some additional images.  Unfortunately these last two pieces sold before I could do that. If you would like to be kept up to date on my Etsy listings without waiting for blog posts or visiting Etsy, you could follow my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/messiejessieart , this is linked to my Etsy shop and updates whenever I list anything new.

I found a lovely little book of poems by different poets which has inspired my next few pieces, this one being  The Moth by Walter De La Mare.

The Moth

Isled in the midnight air,
Musked with the dark’s faint bloom,
Out into glooming and secret haunts
The flame cries,

‘Come!’Lovely in dye and fan,
A-tremble in shimmering grace,
A moth from her winter swoon
Uplifts her face:

Stares from her glamorous eyes;
Wafts her on plumes like mist;
In ecstasy swirls and sways
To her strange tryst.

Wall Assemblage Moths

Wall Assemblage Moths

Wall Assemblage Moths

I love old fabrics and bits of old paper, always have and am a natural hoarder, much to my families bemusement (as I have paper and fabric nests all over). At the moment I just love the word disintegration but, to me its not about breaking up and disappearing to nothing, rather its more like a chance to develop and reconstruct.

Wall Assemblage Moths

This wall assemblage is made from a piece of found driftwood off my local beach. I’ve added three white moths, which I distressed so that they look as if they are slightly disintegrating. I wanted the moths to be white, as I like the white contrast against the piece of wood whilst keeping the piece very fresh and simple.
